The full description

A head is where cheap tripod systems go wrong. Grease-damped heads go stiff in the cold exactly when you need to move slowly, and cast bodies develop play that shows up as a shimmer at 15×.

This one is machined aluminium on PTFE bearing surfaces, with pan drag adjustable between 0.4 and 2.1 Nm — enough range to hold a spotter still and still move a binocular smoothly. The clamp is a standard 38 mm Arca, so plates you already own fit it.

Not for

Video work. There is no fluid cartridge here and the pan will not be cinematic.

Field notes

01Set the drag so the head moves when you push it and stops when you stop. Locked is not the goal.
02Tighten the clamp with a coin or a glove, not a fingernail. It is meant to be firm.
03Level the head, not the legs. That is what the panning base is for.

Construction, care and warranty

Construction: CNC-machined 6061 aluminium body and clamp; PTFE bearing surfaces; adjustable pan and tilt drag; 38 mm Arca-Swiss clamp with a safety stop; 3/8-16 base thread with a 1/4-20 adapter.
Care: Keep grit out of the clamp jaws. Do not oil the bearing surfaces — oil is what ruins a PTFE head.
