What it is made of
20D ripstop shell38 g/m²
Light, and it will not survive brush. That is the trade you are making.
Continuous-filament insulation60 g/m²
Synthetic, so a wet jacket is still a warm jacket.
Elastic-bound cuffs
Nothing to snag, nothing to adjust with cold hands.
The full description
Synthetic, not down. Down is lighter and warmer for its weight and every one of those advantages disappears the moment it gets wet — which, on the hunts this jacket is built for, it will. A soaked synthetic jacket is a cold jacket that still works; a soaked down jacket is a bag of wet feathers.
Insulation is mapped: 60 g/m² through the body where you sit still, 40 g/m² in the sleeves where you move. The shell is a 20D ripstop, which is light and is not brush-proof — read the notFor line before you buy this for an upland hunt.
The temperature figure in the spec table is deliberately worded as an observation. There is no honest standardised rating for a hunting jacket worn seated in wind, so we have told you what our testers wore it in instead of inventing a number.
Bought for
Long sits, glassing, and anything where you stop moving in the cold.
Not for
Walking in, and any hunt through hard brush — a 20D shell tears on a thorn. If your hunt is upland, this is the wrong jacket and we would rather say so.
Field notes
- 01This is a sitting layer. Put it on when you stop, take it off before you walk.
- 02It stuffs into its own left-hand pocket. The sack is there if you would rather keep the pocket.
- 03Wet? Wear it. It insulates damp. Do not hang it in a tree to dry and sit there cold.
