What it is made of
500D Cordura lower213 g/m²
Rock and brush hit the bottom third; that is where the heavy fabric is.
Stretch woven upper180 g/m²
Seals to the calf without a drawcord digging in.
Stainless lace hook
Not plated steel. Plated hooks rust off in one wet season.
The full description
Gaiters keep scree, snow, burrs and water out of a boot. This pair is built around the two parts that actually fail: the instep strap and the lace hook. The strap is replaceable and ships with two spares; the hook is stainless rather than plated, so it does not rust off in a wet season.
Mid-height rather than knee-height, because knee-height gaiters are hot, and most of what you are keeping out comes in below the calf anyway.
Bought for
Western hunts in scree and snow, and upland walking through burrs.
Not for
Wading depth. A gaiter is not waterproof at the boot line and never has been.
Field notes
- 01Hook to the lowest lace, not the top one. It pulls the gaiter down onto the boot instead of lifting it.
- 02Strap goes under the arch, not under the heel. Under the heel it wears through in a season.
- 03Rinse the instep straps after a mud hunt — grit in the webbing is what saws them apart.
In the box
- Gaiters, one pair
- Spare instep straps, 2
