What it is made of

  • 17.5 micron merino400 g/m² underfoot

Cushion where the boot works, thin where it does not.

  • Nylon25%

Heel and toe, which is where every sock dies.

  • Elastane arch band3%

Keeps the sock from creeping down inside a boot.

The full description

A hunting sock has two jobs that pull in opposite directions: cushion underfoot and low bulk everywhere else. This one is knitted at 400 g/m² under the foot and 220 g/m² up the shin, so it pads where the boot works and stays thin where a boot cuff closes.

Over-the-calf height means a gaiter or a boot cuff never touches skin. Twenty-five percent nylon at the heel and toe, because that is where socks fail and nobody warranties a sock.

Bought for

Cold-weather hunting in a fitted boot.

Not for

Warm-weather upland miles — this much wool underfoot is too much in September.

Field notes

  1. 01One pair on the foot, one dry pair in the pack, always. Wet feet end hunts earlier than cold ones.
  2. 02Base-layer cuffs go inside the sock. Over it, they wick ground water straight up your leg.
  3. 03Wash cold, hang dry. A dryer takes the elastane out of the arch band and the sock starts creeping.
